58th AGM | 7pm 8th August

The 58th AGM (2011 season) will be held at the at Richmond Working Mens Club Thursday 8th December 2011 at 7pm. Not the Cashmere club!!! Richmond Working Mens club- entry at intersection of London and Stanmore Road. Meeting is upstairs at the Alpine Lounge. Their bar, bistro and restaurant is also open if you want to get food/ drink before orafter the AGM.

You will see we have some interesting motions this year- including a motion by Mr Mike Davies, Esquire on the proposed top tow relocation. With luck Mr Nick Jarman, beloved Field Manager will repeat the excellent presentation he did for the committee of the plans at the meeting. Mix this in with a few beverages and Frazers presentation of accounts for last season (pretty positive at last count) and we should have a fun night. We may even get a cameo visit by Nicolas Cullen & co.

Highlights from the Craigieburn section of the K2 Big Mountain CHILL Series 2011.

Open!

We have come though the other side of the storm with over 1.2 meters of new snow at the base area. The staff have done a fantastic job in getting the mountain controlled and open.

Porters pass and the ski area access road both require chains on all vehicles. Please do not attempt the road without them.

On top of a considerable base, this season is now set to be one for the history books. Dont miss out!

Field Update | 16th July

As you are probably well aware, we have had a great deal of snow in the last week. Much of this has fallen (and blown) onto the road, and the efforts in the last few days have been concentrated on getting access to the field open. Yesterday the focus was on the hill, and a great deal of progress was made in digging out the tows and controlling the ski area.

We are looking to open Monday 18th July, with access to the ski area being available from the afternoon of Sunday 17th.

Please watch this website and snow.co.nz for updates. The CSA snowphone will also be updated 03 383 8888 ext 7

Beat the crowds with a club

[singlepic id=198 w=320 h=240 float=left]Fed up with price hikes of the big resorts? Join the club. Club ski areas are something quite unique to Canterbury and a hidden gem in an industry where money seems to come first. Canterbury ski clubs are not for profit organisations, and are operated and maintained by a group of enthusiasts who put skiing and snowboarding first.

Joining a ski club does not mean you have to have any particular experience, skills or ability,  just an enthusiasm for the sport and a willingness to make a contribution. You will gain an appreciation of what goes on behind the scenes, an affiliation with like minded enthusiasts and take a far smaller hit in the pocket than you get from the big commercial fields. At Craigieburn you can take advantage of the Club Snow Safety Weekends at the beginning of every season, a chance to learn and develop your avalanche awareness  and safety skills. As a family your kids will get to participate in Grom’s weeks during the school holidays and make lifelong friends in safe and friendly surroundings.

[singlepic id=199 w=320 h=240 float=right]By joining Craigieburn you becoming part-owner of  a legendary ski field, and have access to hugly discounted ski and accommodation rates. A season pass for instance is only $275! Slopeside accommodation (including dinner and breakfast) can be had for as little as $30 a night! Becoming a member also gets you discounted skiing and accommodation at other club fields.

If you would like to know more, see the information on joining the club, or member prices.

Cheers, and see you this season!

Prices tumble in 2010

snow005.jpgWe have made some huge changes to our pricing structure for 2010, including bargain accommodation and package prices during the off-peak period (shoulder season from opening weekend until July 31st, and September 4th until closing day).

Check out the pages on accommodation and package prices for more information.

We will start taking bookings in the next few weeks and expect lodge space to be in hot demand over this period. Please keep this in mind when booking your holiday and get in early to avoid disappointment.

Additional offers for multiday ski passes will become available over the next month or two, so keep checking back.

See you on the hill in 2010!

Craigieburn Rates Among World’s Top 10 “Green Adventures”

Press Release: Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism

Worldwide Honour Names Craigieburn Alongside Jamaica, Finland Among Favourite “Clean Breaks”

Everyone who lives in the South Island knows it’s the best place in the world to unwind. But it’s always nice when the world takes notice.

The UK’s TIMES ONLINE has listed Canterbury’s Craigieburn ski field among its favourite “10 trips to break clean from daily life.”

The Times team spent 10 years researching the “clean break” they were seeking, from the Pyrenees to the Kalahari. They call it a “journey into the heart of a destination and its culture, when you do something different, stay in family‐run hotels, visit local festivals and hire local guides.”

“To think that one of the world’s top green, clean and favourite destinations is a simple hour’s drive from Christchurch . . . we know we are lucky, but do we realise our backyard is among the absolute best in the world?” asks Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism CEO Christine Prince.

Alongside swimming Finland’s lakes and bog‐walking Estonia, “Ski the resort‐free Craigieburn” brings New Zealand to the top of the Times’ list.

“And they say that your skiing will improve immeasurably – on this kind of testing off‐piste terrain it has to,” writes the Times.

Craigieburn is a 988‐acre ski area featuring a spectacular collection of generous powder bowls, steep, skinny chutes and a popular vertical plunge of 1,968 feet. It is part of a network of 13 ski fields located in a single region – Canterbury – known for dramatic vistas of the Southern Alps, lush green plains and cheeky alpine parrots.

The Canterbury region encompasses the heart of the South Island, with Craigieburn itself only one hour’s drive from Christchurch International Airport.

Craigieburn is one of 16 ski areas in the Canterbury region; “A world‐class prescription for clean, green and good‐for‐you couldn’t be closer to home!”

Please come well prepared with appropriate personal safety equipment when you come up for a work party. You may be required to work around chainsaws, heavy equipment or other loud equipment.

We suggest you bring:

It is also a great idea to put a pair of loppers in the back of the car since pruning is a good fill in job.

Hamilton Avalanche 16/08/2008

Excessive snowfall on the days leading up to August 16th forced us to call in the helicopter to help with avi control work. The results were spectacular to say the least. Lodge guests were treated to a spectacle not often seen in this magnitude (from a safe disatance).
